🛁 The Happy Bedtime Routine: 7 Steps to Easier Nights
A predictable bedtime routine is one of the most powerful (and simplest) tools in parenting. When the same steps happen in the same order each night, children's bodies and minds learn that sleep is coming.
Why routines work
Young children thrive on predictability. A routine reduces bedtime battles because there's nothing to negotiate. It's just "what we do." It also gives you dependable, cozy one-on-one time.
The 7 steps
- Pick a consistent bedtime. Most toddlers and preschoolers do well with lights-out between 7 and 8 p.m.
- Screens off an hour before. Bright screens and exciting shows make it harder to wind down.
- Warm bath or wash-up. A gentle bath signals the shift into quiet time.
- Pajamas and teeth. Let your child choose between two pajamas to give them a feeling of control.
- Story time. Read one or two books. Try our bedtime stories!
- A little connection. Share a "best part of today," a song, or a cuddle.
- Same goodnight words. A special phrase, like "Goodnight, sleep tight, see you in the morning light," becomes a comforting signal.
Tips for the tricky parts
- Stalling? Use a picture chart of the routine so your child can see what's next.
- Getting out of bed? Calmly and quietly walk them back with minimal talking, every time.
- Afraid of the dark? A dim, warm night-light and a favorite stuffed animal "on guard duty" can help.
Keep the whole routine to about 30 to 45 minutes. Done consistently for a couple of weeks, most families notice evenings get noticeably smoother. Sweet dreams! 🌙
